Evidence for policy in a post-fact world

What is the rightful place of numbers and emotions in policy making? The interaction between science and policy has never been easy, and the people and their representatives are the final arbiter. With beliefs and emotions more volatile and unpredictable in our post-fact world, how do we find the right balance? And how do we deal with a fluid situation, constantly redefined by social media, big data and “alternative statistics” that changes the way we make decisions? The Joint Research Centre (JRC) organises its annual conference “EU4FACTS: Evidence for policy in a post-fact world” on 26 September in Brussels. The event aims to answer these questions and produce recommendations for successful evidence-informed policy making. It will offer a frank debate between leading scientists, policy-makers and communication experts.

Improving knowledge and data on migration

One year from its conception, the European Commission’s Knowledge Centre on Migration and Demography (KCMD) has made significant progress and has provided EU policymakers with valuable instruments to access information and data about migration.

On the 1-year anniversary of the KCMD, let’s have a look at the main achievements and future plans of the Knowledge Centre, as well as at a new migration profile of Mali.

JRC mentoring scheme for refugee scientists

In 2017, the JRC launched a pilot programme to welcome refugee scientists for one-week training programmes at the JRC. The objective of the programme is to introduce them to the European research context, which would allow them to pursue scientific activities in their field of expertise and to help them build up work experience, qualifications and contacts for future employment in Europe.

Research and innovation across EU countries – challenges and developments

The European Commission’s Research and Innovation Observatory (RIO) at the Joint Research Centre has published the 2016 edition of the RIO reports, which assess the evolution of the research and innovation systems at country level and identify key challenges.

Big fish in big trouble in Europe

A new study by an international team of scientists, published in Nature Ecology & Evolution, warns that many large fish species, including many of the sharks and rays of Europe, are threatened with extinction. Confirming the findings of previous studies, the scientists highlight regional differences in fish stock status in Europe and point to overfishing in the Mediterranean.

The Science behind the Capital Markets Union Mid-term Review

Today’s Mid-term Review of the Capital Markets Union (CMU) Action Plan took stock of the progress towards better funding and investment opportunities and economic resilience. JRC has provided support for the economic analysis and econometric modelling to find out where we stand with financial integration.
